Hey, I love that armor! George Perez designed it! Pffft…it’s a lot cooler than a business suit or a high-collared, skintight purple tunic, if you ask me.
Oh, and don’t get me wrong, I love it too–and Perez is a genius. The DCSH version really helps the problems this version has–but you still have to admit…there are much better ways he could have designed this.
Yes, it’s true. It’s iconic, but it’s definitely a wee bit goofy, in a retro-cool way. Also–it looks almost exactly like the Anti-monitor’s armor. What’s the deal with that, George?
My recollection is that the armor was designed by then-regular-artist Curt Swan, or perhaps by Murphy Anderson, in the days when Luthor would show up in his prison greys. The suit was ancient technology from the planet where Luthor was a good guy and thus Superman was a bad guy ( for wanting to drag him away from his people ). The place had a red sun, too!
The basic suit has had many different origins since. The silly gorget might serve to keep Lex from being beheaded…
@ritaxis: Nope–Perez was the designer, and it was designed for the Kenner Super Powers toy line way before it appeared in the comics. In fact, it was that figure’s popularity that caused the armor to appear in the comics to begin with.

it’s not that he was trying to make it like that…he just accidentally mis-measured his neck with inches instead of centimeters.

It protects his ears… from… being yelled at by Superman from the side. Right.
